Cross Cohort Analysis: Insights for Racial Justice in Grant-Making

Introducing the Cross Cohort Analysis

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our Cross Cohort Analysis report.

At the Funders for Race Equality Alliance (FREA), we bring together funders committed to making racial justice a reality. One of the Alliance’s key aims is to increase sustainable and flexible funding for Black and Minoritised-led organisations. Our Racial Justice Audit tool works towards this, tracking how much funding and what type of funding is reaching Black and Minoritised-led organisations.

Our Audit has been running for three years, and we have produced a report analysing this time period. The report delves into the grant-making practices of 27 UK- based funders, analysing data from 4,093 grants, with a total value of £355 million.

Key Highlights and Findings

  • The 3rd cohort had the highest result in terms of funder participation and the amount of funding going to organisations tackling racial inequity.

  • Across all cohorts, the average individual grant amount awarded to organisations tackling root causes, was 9% higher than those addressing the symptoms.

  • The 2nd cohort, which took place during 2021, saw a significant increase in the number and value of grants awarded, as well as an increase in projects aimed at tackling symptoms of racial inequity.
